AIR UNIT Description: S.T.A.R.R. 1 Sheriff's Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance Rescue The mission of the Sheriff's Air Support Unit is to enhance community safety and protect life and property, by assisting Sheriff's Marine Patrol and Marine Patrol units in their capabilities to provide Law Enforcement. The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office, in an innovative effort to better serve the public by reducing crime and increasing boater safety on the Delta waterways, has purchased a Bell 407 law enforcement helicopter, STARR 1. STARR 1 was purchased with a windfall of funds coming from AB3220, Local Law Enforcement funds that are dedicated to the unincorporated areas of the county. These funds were specified for new programs. STARR1 is a seven passenger light turbine utility aircraft, which can travel at speeds in excess of 150 M.P.H. STARR1 has a variety of equipment to include gyro stabilized infrared and 1-14 zoom color video camera. The camera is now equipped with video downlinking capabilities which assist in surveying situations from the ground. It also has a 50 million-candle power spotlight and global satellite moving map system. The crew of STARR 1 consists of one lieutenant, 2 deputies, 2 reserve deputies, and 3 civilian pilots. STARR 1 patrols five days a week and is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. BELL 407 SPECIFICATIONS
